Rock Beach: The Inspiration Behind My First Painting

Rock Beach: The Inspiration Behind My First Painting

I’m so excited to share that my first two painting from my 'Cornwall from above' are now available! I'd love to share the story behind my first painting, inspired by one of my family’s favourite places- Rock Beach. Nestled on the stunning coastline of Cornwall, Rock Beach holds a special place in my heart, filled with memories, sunny days, and incredible views.

This summer, during my holiday in Cornwall, I had the opportunity to capture aerial footage of Rock Beach with my drone. As I flew above, I was buzzing with excitement at the contrast between the ocean and the golden/pinky sands, a combination that filled my imagination with painting ideas. Whether I was catching the ferry from Padstow or walking along the beautiful cliffs with my family, my brain was full of inspiration.

Before I started creating the piece, I’ll admit, I had quite a few nerves and a lot of anticipation. I wanted so badly to translate the imagery and ideas in my head perfectly onto the canvas. But in reality, nothing ever turns out perfectly and exactly how you imagine it straight away, I just had to start. That thought allowed me to release some of the pressure and just enjoy the process of bringing my vision to life.

The colours and textures of the landscape influenced the main part of the artwork leading me to incorporate my signature coral reefs into the seascape. By weaving these coral elements into the painting, I aim to bring an underwater world into the scenery, which creates a unique painting combining the oceans surface and the life beneath the surface.

The process of translating this vision onto canvas was exciting. I used a variety of materials to create 3D coral elements, adding depth and dimension to the artwork. I love the combination of creating depth with painting techniques, texture paste and clay. If the 3D elements are something that you love because it creates depth but you're worried about dusting, the floating frame I chose has a bigger depth than the canvas, allowing the coral to be fully appreciated while protecting its intricate details from falling dust.

I hope that through this painting, viewers can feel the serenity of Rock Beach and perhaps even recall their own favourite beach memories or inspire you to visit one day! I highly recommend a visit to explore the beach and lovely cliff walks.

Thank you for taking this journey with me as I share my inspirations and creative process. Stay tuned for more updates as I continue to share the pieces from my 'Cornwall from Above' collection!
