How I became an artist

How I became an artist

It’s been an incredible journey to get to this point, creating art that I’m truly passionate about and inspired by one of my favourite places. Reflecting on how it all started, I’m really proud of how far I've have come.

My creative journey began during my time at university, I studied textile design and specialised in embroidery. For my final major project, I created textured coral reef-inspired pieces with the vision of exhibiting them. I got started in working with clay to create my own 'beads' as I couldn't create the effect I wanted with ready made glass beads. I poured my passion into every detail and received a first class honours, I was very proud and was sad that I couldn't continue working on the project. But little did I know that this project would lay the foundation for something much bigger. Fast forward five years, and here I am, still working with coral-inspired art, a concept I’ve carried with me all this time.

Straight out of university, I took the leap and started my own business. It was right as lockdown began, so I found myself working from my parents dining room, navigating the challenges of running a business during such an uncertain time. Despite the hurdles, I hit some incredible milestones and managed to save up enough money to convert our garage into a studio. Having a dedicated creative space felt like such an achievement, and it allowed me to focus on growing the business even further.

But as time went on, I began to feel like something was missing. I’d lost touch with my creativity and found myself craving the joy and inspiration I felt while working on my coral reef project at university. The idea of being an artist, felt completely out of reach and didn't feel like something that was possible. It wasn’t until I found the courage (from my wonderful business coach Claire hill) to experiment and start creating again that things began to change. With the space to explore new techniques and ideas, I slowly rediscovered my passion for art.

Now, I’m here, painting the ocean and creating the artwork I’ve always dreamed of. My Cornwall From Above collection has been a particularly meaningful project for me, combining my love of Cornwall’s breathtaking landscapes with the vibrant underwater world that has always inspired me. It feels surreal to look back and see how this journey has unfolded, from the dining room to a studio, from uncertainty to fulfilment.

I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share my work and my story with you. Thank you for following along on this journey and here’s to what’s next!
