Capturing Trevone Bay: Adding Depth

Capturing Trevone Bay: Adding Depth

Trevone Bay has always been one of my favourite beaches and serves as a key inspiration for my second painting in the 'Cornwall from Above' collection. This collection focuses on capturing the breathtaking essence of Cornwall’s coastline from an aerial perspective, blending my love for the sea with my signature 3D coral elements.

I visit Trevone at least once each time I go to Cornwall, as we usually stay nearby. It’s the perfect beach for a quick visit, especially in the evening. During my last visit, I was treated to a lovely sunset that left a lasting impression on me. The stunning orange and pink hues filled the sky, creating the perfect backdrop.

This was the second time I had tried flying the drone on the beach. It was a fun but slightly scary experience since it was still new to me. As I flew the drone higher, I was so excited to see the first clips of how the sea looked from above. However, my dad was a slightly panicking beside me, telling me I was too close to the cliffs or that he couldn’t see it. His concern made it quite difficult for me to concentrate on controlling the drone (I don't think he trusted me to fly it myself haha)

I knew instantly that I had to translate that moment onto the canvas. I wanted to add my own twist by incorporating the coral reefs I’ve come to love creating. I could visualise it in my mind as I stood on the beach, with the landscape of the beach intertwined with the coral filling the darker patches of the ocean.

Before this trip, I had struggled with feeling like the painting process was a natural experience, but as soon as I began this piece, it flowed so effortlessly that I just knew I was on the right path. Although I did have a couple of moments of doubt regarding whether to make changes. I initially took some depth out of the darker sections in the ocean, but then decided to go over those areas with watered-down paint to capture the ocean’s layers. I'm so glad I went with my gut because the small change really made a difference!

This painting not only represents the beauty of Trevone Bay but also marks a significant milestone in my artistic journey. I’ve come a long way from feeling uncertain about my abilities to confidently embracing new techniques and ideas. It feels as though I’m stepping into the next phase of my style, and this piece serves as a reminder that stepping outside my comfort zone can lead to beautiful discoveries. The incorporation of 3D coral elements has become a signature aspect of my work, and I’m excited to see how it continues to develop in future pieces alongside my evolving style.

As with my first painting in this collection, the coral reefs I added to this piece bring a sense of life and texture. They’re crafted from a variety of materials that I sculpt and attach to the canvas by hand, its a really fun and messy process!

As I continue to explore the beauty of Cornwall and the unique elements of my artistry, I hope this painting resonates with you. If you feel drawn to this piece or have a story of your own tied to Trevone Bay or the Cornwall coastline, I’d love to hear it! Your thoughts and experiences enrich the art and make it even more meaningful.
